When Ships "Teleport": The Black Sea GPS Spoofing Incident

In June 2017, multiple vessels operating in the Black Sea suddenly began reporting impossible GPS positions.

Ships that were physically at sea appeared inland at Gelendzhik Airport in Russia instead. Some reports suggested more than 20 vessels were affected simultaneously.

The incident became one of the most widely discussed examples of maritime GPS spoofing ever recorded.

But what made the event particularly dangerous was this:

Many navigation systems still appeared healthy.

Vessels continued receiving:

  • valid GPS positions
  • satellite lock
  • apparently stable navigation data

while the actual position information had become false.

The Real Problem

The biggest danger with modern GNSS anomalies is not always total failure.

Sometimes the danger is when navigation systems continue appearing normal while the underlying navigation data becomes unreliable.
