Northstar Marine Services operates six vessels with around 35 Windows PCs across the fleet.
The day starts by opening our remote management system, which gives us one dashboard showing every managed PC and what needs attention.
One morning, a remote support connection to a PC onboard MV Ocean Meridian was failing over the vessel network, even though the same PC connected immediately when switched to 4G.
We used our management tools to investigate the machine without waiting for it to become free and without taking over the user's screen through TeamViewer or AnyDesk.
From the dashboard, we checked the PC status and remotely ran connectivity tests. We confirmed that the remote support software was running correctly, its server configuration was valid, and a TCP connection to the remote server could be established.
The important clue was that the connection worked over 4G but failed on the vessel network. That allowed us to narrow the problem away from the PC itself and towards the network path.
Further testing showed that the issue was related to the way the vessel network was handling the application's required traffic. We documented the findings and provided the relevant information to the network provider for correction.
Throughout the investigation, the crew continued using the PC normally.
Meanwhile, the same dashboard allowed us to review updates, security alerts and other maintenance work across the remaining vessels.
That is how we approach managed IT: see the problem, investigate it remotely, narrow down the real cause, document it, and avoid disrupting the people actually using the systems.
